I had mentioned before that I had joined two informal French conversational groups: a small (less than 10 member) private group in February 2026, and a large public group in March 2026.
When I first joined them, I had the intention of building up my ad libbing, on-the-spot thinking and conversational skills, which definitely does happen.
In the case of the small private group, the facilitator supports members with corrections, vocabulary, and lessons as required. This group tends to be more open in terms of discussion topics, with more possibility to deviate to the personal lives of members thanks to its small group size.
Meanwhile, discussions within the larger public group are grounded by weekly topics and questions provided by the facilitator. In this group, participants are broken up into many breakout rooms, following a format of ~4 people per group, 30-minutes per group, with one rotation (which fills the scheduled 1-hour length of weekly meetings).
For the most part, discussions follow the weekly topic/questions and take up the full time blocks (sometimes without completing all of them), but sometimes also deviate to the personal lives and interests of participants. Nonetheless, despite the absence of structured instructor support, personal growth and learning still happens, and can even lead to leadership skill growth in creating supportive discussion atmospheres when conversations wind down.
