I want to begin by thanking Seneca Polytechnic, the Canadian Red Cross, as well as our wonderful instructor and participants for making this learning experience possible.
Recently, I’ve done something I’ve wanted to do for a while, and it was life changing.
Despite being a student for most of my life, I can pretty confidently say that no other course has had the same immediacy and impact as Standard First Aid / CPR-C. Suffice to say, completing this course has been one of the best things I've done for myself, and you should do it too.
The CPR911 course followed a blended format, requiring completion of the Canadian Red Cross’ Standard First Aid & CPR - Online modules, which included a crash course on the Canadian Red Cross’ history, principles of impartiality and selflessness in the pursuit of care for others, legal protections & consent, and of course, how to provide aid in a wide variety of situations. Additional health & wellness (biology) information was provided, which actually made me feel guilty for eating potato chips and other snacks the night I reviewed the content. For less than $200, you can have all this knowledge, and also ruin any TV shows that get it wrong.
I mentioned earlier that this course has been the most impactful for me: I learned a lot about the importance of health & wellness, common prevention & treatment techniques - but more importantly, how to be prepared and selfless in rendering aid. Most of that occurred in the classroom with demos & practice, particularly for slings & splints, and for CPR - which despite portrayals in film and television, is not a cakewalk. In the second round of practice, despite soreness and exhaustion, I managed to “lock in” and ignore whatever I was going through in order to provide CPR - a substantial accomplishment in personal growth, thanks to the knowledge and confidence gained from the course.
If you happen to be interested in taking the course like I did (in-person component at Seneca Polytechnic Newnham), you can find it here on Seneca's website, sessions from May 2026 onward are offered for $38 less.
